This article includes mild spoilers. They are unable to see one another, but they can speak and flirt and reveal their deepest desires if they so choose. Yes, this is all supposed to end in marriage. Many, many people have watched it — it has appeared frequently in the No. I absolutely did LOL, a lot. But something else happened: Dare I say it, by the end of Episode 3, I believed. It is crazy. And totally irrational. But also: Aww. They speak, without any hint of irony, of this elaborately conceived setup as an idealized version of the dating scene, a positive alternative to the comparably shallow act of swiping right or left.
On ‘Love Is Blind,’ Love Is Earnest
L ay in victuals and potable water. Put your cats in a cattery. Then, and only then, do I advise that you settle down to watch Love Is Blind. And this is because Love Is Blind the Netflix reality dating show in which participants communicate with each other only from isolated pods and decide to get engaged on the basis of conversation alone, then live together for a month before the actual wedding — an actual wedding — takes place is, basically, crack.

Hot on the heels of the surprisingly sweet The Circle , the Netflix algorithm has produced another bingeable reality show. This one is called Love Is Blind , which is hosted by a largely absent real-life celebrity couple—Nick and Vanessa Lachey, who fell in love face-to-face—and brings together a tried and true formula. It sounds like a lofty social experiment, but, dear reader, it most certainly is not.
Love Is Blind begins by dropping 30 young Atlanta singles into an elaborate blind dating facility set for ten days, at the end of which they must either get engaged to a fellow contestant or go home. The men and women live in separate quarters connected by a row of 15 pods, where they begin a rotation of 7-minute speed date sessions to get to know each other.
Six couples 12 of the 30 participants make it to this stage of the game. The couples get to meet in person once they are engaged, and after the anonymous Circle -esque portion of the show ends, the novelty of the concept mostly wears off although the show remains dreadfully watchable. From there, the engaged couples are whisked off to Mexico for a pre-wedding honeymoon in which they begin to cultivate their physical relationships they already have incredibly strong emotional bonds—you could never understand, having not experienced pod-dating yourself.
Trouble begins early on for some couples in paradise.

Netflix’s dating-show sensation is grimly fascinating. Maybe don’t watch it.
Netflix’s new dating show has a unique premise — singles meet and get engaged without ever seeing each other face-to-face — but it’s also uniquely depressing. After 10 days, they have a choice: Get engaged, or get the hell out of Dodge. For the first handful of episodes, Love Is Blind does feel like something relatively new. And because none of the participants are actually blind, one woman must deal with the fact that she is low-key repulsed by the man she agreed to marry. The good people at Kinetic Content — producers of Love Is Blind , Marriage at First Sight , and a series called I kid you not The Spouse House — are adept at finding people who are compellingly complex and also willing to put their need for attention above their own dignity.
Netflix plans to parcel out the episodes 1 through 5 will hit on Feb. Still, there is something about Love Is Blind that feels dark, even depressing. All dating shows are built on the universal desire to find a quick fix for the inescapable burden of human isolation — but at least with The Bachelor or Love Island the stakes are pleasingly low. Even if those relationships implode, it just means an Instagram model will suffer temporary embarrassment in exchange for , new followers.
On Love is Blind , even the silly moments are shot through with an undercurrent of sadness. The bachelorette parties are particularly bleak, as two women get messily, distressingly drunk in an effort to avoid their very valid doubts about marrying a stranger.

Some of us are so deep in the game and so fed up of losing that we’re willing to marry a stranger without having a clue what they look like. The urgency to their longing will make single viewers question why they haven’t taken the relationship rat race as seriously as these people. Skip navigation! Story from Best of Netflix.

Love Is Blind review: toxic, revolting – and totally addictive. The Netflix dating show that aims to marry off contestants before they even see each.
Good looks and whatever other aesthetic concerns are out of the equation; these relationships are based on the true connection of conversation. It does help, though, that everyone is good-looking. Things get less theoretical and more actual when, after only a week or so, several of the couples get engaged sight unseen, only meeting face to face after the first proposal, then embarking on a fraught month of cohabitation on the way to a quickie wedding.
This is The Bachelor condensed and reshaped, a throwback to the old gimmick reality days of 20 years ago with a decidedly contemporary veneer of earnest, faux sociology. In its clumsy, powerful way, Love Is Blind lays bare the artifice—or, at least, the uncertainty—at the heart of any long-term coupling. For a short, intense burst, anyway: I slept on Love Is Blind after watching the finale late last night, and now feel a bit less worked up about the show than I did in the bleary wee hours.
Waking up this morning, I had the sense that a disorienting, and yet somehow also clarifying, crucible has been passed through, but had no way to assess its value. The finale is equal parts bruising and cathartic. The last episode is all about the weddings, the five remaining couples negotiating jangled nerves and nagging doubts as they head to the altar, one pair at a time. There are real tears—from parents, from siblings, from friends—that exist right alongside entirely justifiable skepticism.
The love between these couples, relative strangers to one another, seems so unreal—and yet that little, niggling chance that something is actually true can snare even the biggest skeptic for a second. The first couple up for resolution was lunkish, distressingly serious Damian and his restless bride-to-be, Giannina. In most of her big moments, she seems to be performing, putting on a decently acted—but obviously acted—show as she argues with Damian about their sex life or makes grand declarations of love.
